The Barons are set to play at the TAPPS state tournament for the first time.

As the team’s only senior, Julia Garcia offers the best perspective on Saint Mary’s Hall’s breakthrough season in girls basketball.Seriously. It never crossed her mind.

Saint Mary’s Hall plays Houston Second Baptist at 2 p.m. Thursday at Waco University High School in the state semifinals.“We get to play in a role that we’re comfortable with, which is that of an underdog,” Barons third-year coach Matt Hayes said. “We get to play trying to prove something. We always have a little extra fire when we’re playing from behind like that.”

“There’s a lot more competitive atmosphere on the team,” Garcia said. “Nobody’s spot is solidified. We’re all competing and getting better, and we definitely all push each other to get there.”“Our team dynamic is what really helps us,” Chase said. “We don’t see each other as, ‘Oh, she’s a freshman. She shouldn’t be doing that.’ We believe in each other so much, and we all celebrate our successes.”
