SAINT JOHN, N.B. — A 45-year-old man convicted of sexually assaulting a girl between the ages of eight and 18 will face 12 years in prison.

The girl testified that the man raped her one to four times a week until she turned 18, and when she was admitted to hospital in March last year, she was in the first trimester of pregnancy. Crown prosecutor Elaina Campbell asked for the maximum of 14 years for sexual exploitation, with defence lawyer Charles Bryant asking for seven to 10 years, saying the man had no record.

Haché said the report didn't give him enough information that anything had changed for the man since his arrest, and he had to conclude he had a high risk to re-offend. In listing aggravating factors, he said the man abused a position of trust, abused the girl when she was at a"particularly vulnerable" age and continued into her developmental teenage years.
