Salinas holds on to the 28-21 win as Sacred Heart Prep’s final pass is knocked incomplete.

SALINAS — Sacred Heart Prep should not have even been in a position to tie or win its first-round CCS Division I game.

That was until Salinas ran out of bounds on the first play and then threw an incomplete pass on the second to help give Sacred Heart Prep the ball back with about 2:30 left. Salinas quarterback Adam Shaffer helplessly watched what he called “the longest two and a half minutes of his life” from the sideline.

“This team means everything to me,” said a tearful Maxwell. “I love each and every one of my teammates and coaches, brothers and family. This means everything to me. This my last time ever putting on shoulder pads and a helmet, and I’m gonna look back and remember this.” Salinas went up 14-0 within six minutes of kickoff in front of at least a thousand purple-clad supporters, with Shaffer throwing one short touchdown to Nyziah Hunter, who cut across field and outran the SHP secondary for a 12-yard score.

After taking that uppercut of a first punch, Sacred Heart Prep reeled off 14 straight points of their own behind seniors Anthony Noto and Andrew Latu. Each found the endzone in the second quarter and shrugged off tacklers while doing it. Despite how the game and season unfolded, coach Mark Grieb refused to let the ending define the group’s 2022 journey, one that saw the team go 9-2 and win nine straight games during the regular season.
