Environment Minister Tim Halman made the announcement at the Springfield Lake Recreation Centre in Middle Sackville, placing the Sackville River Wilderness Area into a protected designation, along with six new nature reserves and seven additional wilderness areas designated for area expansion. “Our land and water are among our province’s most valuable resources, providing multiple benefits for people and the economy,” Halman said.

An Environment Department official said there are about 60 wilderness areas and nature reserves still to be designated from the 2013 parks and protected areas plan, along with a selection of provincial parks.Raymond Plourde, the senior wilderness co-ordinator with the Ecology Action Centre, said Monday’s announcement is tremendous news.
