The NDP and Liberals sold out in favour of more years in power, and it could accelerate the move of young voters to the right
There’s little in the pact to address affordability or the all-important issue of electoral reform. The pharmacare promise falls short of even Trudeau’s 2019 pharmacare pledge, and the reality is that income-tested health-care supports mean little to the average voter in a new reality where employment status affects access more than take-home pay. There is nothing new in this deal, and certainly nothing radical.
They should hammer home that Liberals, and now the NDP, traded a real quest for affordability and an end to the housing crisis in favour of more years in power. They should point out that, while Singh will qualify for a cozy pension after six years of service in 2025, many young professionals can barely afford rent.
To do that, however, they need to stop ranting about nonexistent socialism that does little to nothing to scare voters under the age of 50 and focus on the very real opportunity they’ve been handed. At his best, Pierre Poilievre may be the best-positioned Conservative leadership candidate to do so with his economic chops and ability to make a political point sting. A couple years as leader may even soften his sometimes too-sharp edges.
