Against all odds, the continent has been in sync for the first time in years
Brexit was an obviously massive blow, costing the EU an eighth of its population, its second largest economy and one of its strongest military powers. Many observers considered it the beginning of the end of the bloc and the continent’s position as a global power player.
European nations outside the EU seemed equally unreliable. Switzerland famously doesn’t involve itself in international disputes and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was otherwise occupied trying to figure out whether the “bring your own booze” party he attended during COVID lockdowns was in fact a work or social function. If Ukraine needed a wine fridge delivered to the frontlines, that’d be one thing, but few were holding their breath for meaningful sanctions or military support.
For the first time in its history, the EU agreed to finance the purchase and delivery of weapons and other equipment to a country under attack. They closed their airspace to nearly all Russian aircraft, banned Russian state media outlets and refused to compete against Russian sports teams.Article content
