The Trudeau Liberals\u0027 new drug policies are likely to make it even harder to get life\u002Dsaving medicine

Maddeningly, Canadians’ access to pharmaceuticals that are readily available around the globe may soon become even more scarce. New Patented Medicine Prices Review Board rules come into effect on July 1, which will give the organization tasked with regulating drug prices in Canada more power to enforce stricter rules on pharmaceutical companies that want their drugs cleared for sale.

Patient groups including the ALS Society of Canada, Canadian Cancer Survivor Network, Fighting Blindness Canada, Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders, and Cystic Fibrosis Canada have campaigned against the PMPRB’s new rules, arguing they’ll only further restrict access to essential medicines. Rather than listen to these groups’ concerns, the PMPRB did what any government agency does in a healthy democracy: it launched a covert, taxpayer-funded smear campaign against them. The $56,000 “communications plan,” launched in February, accused patient groups of spreading disinformation and fear mongering. It was only discovered by Calgary Shepard MP Tom Kmiec via an access to information and privacy request.
