While the feds have agreed to give provinces an additional $42.6 billion in health funding over the next decade, money alone won\u0027t be enough
BC Cancer will arrange and coordinate all appointments and travel, with the province paying not just for treatments, but also transportation, accommodations and meals. It will also cover the same costs for each patient to have a support person travel with them. Undoubtedly, the bill will be high as taxpayer dollars are diverted across the border.
But this should be a wake-up call for provincial governments across Canada, and the federal Liberals, too. While the feds have agreed to give provinces an additional $42.6 billion of health care funds over the next decade, this won’t be enough. More money is certainly helpful, but it can only go so far without systemic change and tough conversations about priorities.Article content
The federal Liberals would also be wise to borrow from Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s platform and find a way to fasttrack the licensing of foreign doctors and nurses. Perfectly qualified doctors forced to work outside their fields is a problem we’ve long known about and just about everyone agrees we should fix. Doing so should be an urgent priority, followed by the intentional targeting of more health care workers for fasttracked immigration.
It may be time to moderate the pace of immigration in fields outside medicine, the skilled trades and other absolutely essential areas while we catch up. We should also reconsider family reunification policies that often negate the benefits of admitting young or working-age newcomers by also admitting aging or elderly relatives. In an ideal world, we could do both, but the current reality is anything but ideal.
