It’s going on 25 years since the Maple Leafs last met their closest geographical rivals in their one and only playoff series.
The Leafs shouldn’t take any team below them lightly, especially one which has beaten them three out of past five meetings and has a decades-old grip on road games, a record of 67-33-6-6. But Toronto has struggled against even lower opposition.
Despite their initial inexperience, current GM Kevyn Adams and second-year coach Don Granato have brought some stability. The development of Tage Thompson, their Arizona-born answer to Toronto power forward Auston Matthews, and other prospects have provided hope for the future, if not squeezing them into this year’s playoffs.Article content
