Saanich Police in British Columbia have apprehended a record-breaking number of impaired drivers in 2024, exceeding the previous year's total by almost 35%. The department stopped 628 impaired drivers, with 278 receiving 90-day license suspensions under the Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) program. This represents a significant increase from 2023's figures.

Saanich Police say a record-setting number of impaired drivers were taken off the road in 2024, far surpassing the previous record set in 2023.

“These drivers either failed a roadside screening device or refused to provide a breath sample, resulting in a 90-day license suspension and a 30-day vehicle impoundment.” From Jan. 1 to Dec. 10, 2024 Victoria Police removed 277 impaired drivers from the road, slightly below the yearly average of 303 seen over the past five years.

Before 2023, West Shore RCMP saw a total of 526 impaired driving files in 2022, a total of 387 in 2021 – 403 in 2020 – and 349 in 2019.
