Approved in 2020, Saanich’s climate plan aims to cut community-wide greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030

A Saanich staff report presented to council Monday night indicated the district has reduced its overall greenhouse emissions by about 19 per cent from a 2007 baseline, but it’s well short of where it should be if it hopes to reach its target of a 50 per cent reduction by 2030.

The report singled out transportation, notably personal vehicles, as the largest source of community-wide emissions, though that has been reduced by 25 per cent since 2007. It said many workers were still working from home for some part of the week and recreational travel was still affected by restrictions.

However, the reports pointed out waste is a clear indicator of consumption and the amount of waste per capita in the region of 400 kg per person far exceeds the regional target of 125 kg per person.
