“We were able to knock the fire down, plus the assistance of some of the public were knocking it down, there was a water truck that was driving by actually threw quite a bit of water on it and slowed down the initial edge of the fire,” Beddington said. “It’s not something we normally encourage people to try and do but these fellows just happened to be driving by and had a full tank of water on their truck…it just buys us a bit of time but it’s not something that we recommend.”Saanich Police says the highway has reopened, but Elk Lake Drive in both directions is closed to allow crews to respond.
Three BC Transit routes are on a detour due to the road closure. The 35, 72 and 75 will detour via the Pat Bay Highway.The buses are not servicing Elk Lake Dr. R-35,72&75 will detour via Pat Bay Hwy.
