Gains in the materials and industrial sectors helped power Canada's main stock index higher in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 41.37 points at 26,693.34. The S&P 500 index was up 3.24 points at 3,218.81, while the Nasdaq composite was up 8.28 points at 10,482.11.The September crude contract was down 28 cents at US$40.65 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was up nearly two cents at US$1.74 per mmBTU.
The August gold contract was up US$10.30 at US$1,810.60 an ounce and the September copper contract was up nearly a penny at US$2.91 a pound.
