S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets climb higher

Canada's main stock index was down in late-morning trading amid losses in the energy and base metal sectors, while U.S. stock markets climbed higher.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 68.25 points at 35,982.09. The S&P 500 index was up 12.59 points at 4,626.26, while the Nasdaq composite was up 29.38 points at 15,625.30.The December crude oil contract was down 62 cents at US$83.43 per barrel and the December natural gas contract was up 29 cents at US$5.47 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was down US$3.80 at US$1,792.00 an ounce and the December copper contract was down less than a penny at US$4.39 a pound.
