As they long for a rapid recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, airlines may revert to old habits by deeply discounting airfares. But until there is a COVID-19 vaccine, a fare war could make things worse both for airlines and for the world

In an ideal world, a rapid recovery of the airline sector would be welcome. This dark period could become a note in the history books and we can all go back to the world as it was before. If that thinking were correct, then the only threat facing airlines is their ability to sustain low fares long enough to return to high yields and profitability.

Airlines will continue to be a vector for transmission across borders, and they will be required to take measures to reduce the likelihood of a spike in the numbers of travellers who fall severely ill. We don’t yet know what requirements will be imposed on airlines.for return to service, but there seems to be agreement that some social distancing measures will be required in the cabin.

Some form of passenger screening prior to boarding may also be required. Whatever the nature of screening, it will impact turn times for flights—again a driving factor for profitability for airlines—making deep discount fares unattractive.
