Many graduate students are at risk of losing their income and health insurance and International students are on the brink of losing their visas. Monday, May 9, 2022.
Administrators take the issue very seriously, university spokeswoman Dory Devlin said in a statement Monday, noting that Rutgers issued $15 million in federal COVID relief funds to grad students in 2021. After a meeting on Monday, Rebecca Givan, the union president, said the administration is still gathering information on the issue.
Some graduate students take issue with the notion that Rutgers spent all its COVID relief money, while others question why some of the recent half-a-billion dollar growth in Rutgers’ endowment, or any other emergency funds, could not be used to help graduate students complete their degrees. “Our individual units are often small and don’t have the budget for program extensions,” he told the board. “We lost cell cultures, canceled our field visits, forfeited visits to our home countries and suffered because of the pandemic. This is a setback to our progress as early career researchers. If we aren’t allowed to graduate because of a lack of funding, our future in academia ends right here.
