Russian and Belarusian tennis players are allowed to play the elite tournaments, but not under the name or flag of their countries
British Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston said on Tuesday he would not be comfortable with a “Russian athlete flying the Russian flag” and winning the famous grasscourt Grand Slam in London.
At the Indian Wells tennis tournament now being played in California, Russian and Belarus players are there, but are playing without national symbols or identification. “We need some potential assurance that they are not supporters of Putin and we are considering what requirements we may need to try and get some assurances along those lines,” he added.
