The Russian winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize said he wants to auction the medal to aid Ukrainian refugees. Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of the Russian Novaya Gazeta newspaper, won the prize for his 'efforts to safeguard freedom of expression.'

In an article in his own newspaper published Tuesday, Mr. Muratov called on others to share “what is dear to you and has a price for others.” He added that the shooting in Ukraine should stop, bodies be repatriated, prisoners exchanged, humanitarian corridors established and refugees helped. The Nobel committee described Novaya Gazeta as the most independent newspaper operating in Russia, publishing articles on sensitive topics ranging from corruption and police violence to electoral fraud, and internet manipulation. Articles typically sign off with an editorial statement saying, “Our journalists aren’t afraid to mine the truth in order to show it to you.”
On March 4, Novaya Gazeta said it would stop publishing articles about the Russian invasion of Ukraine because of censorship. A law in Russia makes it a crime to refer to Russia’s military moves in Ukraine as an invasion or war. Russian President Vladimir Putin uses the term “special military operation.” The law forbids citing Russian casualty figures from any source other than the country’s Defense Ministry.
