Pyotr Koronayev is just one of a number of Russian journalists who have fled Russia after they spoke out against the war in Ukraine.
Because of his public comments about the war, Koronayev could have been eventually subjected to criminal charges. In March,
that criminalized the distribution of"fake news" about the Russian military. The law states that people and news organizations can be punished for misleading rhetoric about the Ukraine invasion, including using terms likefor what Russia calls its"special military operation." Punishment for those prosecuted under the law includes a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law in March that punishes journalists for stories that allegedly contain"fake news" about his military. This has resulted in journalists fleeing the country, including Pyotr Koronayev, who recently requested political asylum after crossing into the U.S. from Mexico.
