OPINION: Despite past assumptions that a war between Russia and Ukraine will remain “regional,” any war in Ukraine will have enormous repercussions in Europe and for in the daily lives of millions of Europeans, writes Michael Yurkovich.

As a proud Western Canadian and a leading investor in Ukraine’s energy sector since the Maidan Revolution eight years ago, I constantly think about Canadian-Ukrainian relations, specifically, how Canada can promote the national security and economic progress of both countries, and that of our Western allies.

The old Euro-Atlantic structures have shown newfound purpose and surprising resilience in recent weeks, but they’re not without serious strategic fissures. Many stem from poor economic choices in the past, most obviously, the German economic and socio-cultural fascination with all things Russian, at the expense of its national security. Germany has, of course, recently risen to the occasion, but it’s not just its national security; it’s that of Europe as a whole.

Germany continues making itself vulnerable to “energy blackmail,” due to its past reliance on Russia for the vast majority of its energy, including for heating and industrial needs. And although it’s changed course this past week, it’s also why its response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine was initially so uninspiring.

As an energy superpower, how can Canada contribute to the energy independence of Europe? More specifically, how can it help mitigate Germany’s and Europe’s dependence on Russian oil and natural gas through the rapid fabrication of floating-liquefied-natural-gas platforms? The fact that our polity and society can’t take a mature approach to energy matters is itself a national security risk.
