A day after being captured by Russian forces, Viktor Tereshchenko, mayor of the Velykoburlutska community in Ukraine, has been released, according to a Kharkiv official.
The announcement came from the head of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, who said Tereshchenko was released by Russian forces and is receiving treatment at a nearby hospital."The enemy's released Viktor Tereshchenko," Syniehubov said in a Telegram post, according to a translation from CNN."I've just spoken to him. He is at the hospital receiving treatment.
Velykoburlutska is a town located near Kharkiv in the northeastern part of the country. Syniehubov did not specify why Russian forces released the mayor. They had kidnapped him Thursday from his workplace, Syniehubov said in a prior message. In a video posted to his Telegram channel, Syniehubov also claimed that Russian invaders blocked him and other officials from distributing humanitarian aid to locals near the evacuation points in the city. As a result, officials opted to establish aid centers in nearby towns in need.
Kharkiv, which is the second-largest city in Ukraine, has been subject to intense fighting throughout the course of the war. So far, Russia has been unable to take control of the city.Reports of Tereshchenko's release come days after Ukraine secured the release of Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fedorov. Ukrainian officials said he was released"after a special operation" and later revealed that he was released by Russian forces as a result of a prisoner swap.
