A pro-Kremlin blogger in the breakaway Donetsk region, where many of the arms depot strikes have been targeted, this weekend said Russian frontline forces were running short of ammunition, describing the situation as a “shell hunger”. Satellite images have in recent days shown the destruction of a warehouse facility in Donetsk used to store Russian military trucks.
Several analysts, both in Russia and in the West, have pointed to the Kremlin’s reliance on rail hubs to transport military supplies and the use of manual labour for loading and unloading, meaning storage tends to be concentrated in larger depots, as key weaknesses. There seems little doubt that the arrival of advanced Nato-standard weaponry has handed Kyiv a badly needed tool in its efforts to try redress the battlefield balance in terms of firepower. The new rocket and artillery systems allow Ukraine to reach further behind enemy lines, and with significantly more accuracy, than hitherto.
Professor Alexander Motyl, a specialist in Ukrainian and Russian affairs at Rutgers University Newark, said: “Is this a game changer? Not yet. The Russians now have to move their dumps beyond the reach of Ukrainian artillery.
