Russia continues to assault Ukraine's energy systems, targeting gas infrastructure and power facilities in the west. This escalation aims to disrupt Ukraine's energy supply during winter. Ukrainian officials report successful interceptions of missiles and drones but acknowledge damage to energy facilities. The attacks coincide with heightened diplomatic efforts, including prisoner exchanges and discussions on bolstering Ukraine's air defense.

Russia launched a new wave of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine on Wednesday, targeting gas infrastructure and other energy facilities in western regions. This assault aims to further cripple Ukraine's struggling power system amidst the harsh winter conditions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces unleashed over 40 missiles during the morning attack and deployed more than 70 drones overnight.

Ukraine's air defense successfully intercepted 30 missiles and 47 drones, while another 27 drones were reportedly 'lost' due to Kyiv's use of electronic warfare to divert their course. Zelenskyy took to social media to condemn the attack, stating, 'Another massive Russian attack. It's the middle of winter, and the target for the Russians remains unchanged: our energy infrastructure.'The capital city of Kyiv also came under attack, prompting hundreds of residents to seek refuge in underground metro stations across the city. Many spent the night huddled together on yoga mats and folded chairs, accompanied by their pets. Reports indicate that two energy facilities in the Drohobych and Stryi districts of Ukraine's western Lviv region were damaged. In neighboring Ivano-Frankivsk, the governor confirmed that air defenses were engaged in repelling Russian attacks on crucial energy facilities. The Ukrainian air force also reported strikes targeting gas infrastructure facilities in the Kharkiv region in the northeast. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed responsibility for the strikes, asserting that all designated targets were successfully hit. In a statement issued after midnight, the ministry justified the attacks as a response to Ukrainian offensives employing U.S. ATACMS and British-made Storm Shadow missiles, as well as an attack on Russia's Krasnodar region aimed at disrupting gas flows through the Turkstream pipeline network. The ministry further stated that their forces successfully struck a major gas storage facility in the western Ukrainian town of Stryi. However, Ukraine's state-owned oil and gas company, Naftogaz, refuted any disruptions in gas supply, assuring the public that 'gas supplies to the population were uninterrupted.' It's crucial to note that Ukraine primarily relies on natural gas for heating homes and cooking, utilizing storage accumulated during summer months to meet winter demands when daily production falls short
