Jess Smith, Russellville High's new baseball coach, is a 2012 graduate of Fort Payne High School. He played on the first national championship baseball team at Alexander City’s Central Alabama Community College.

Smith, whose hiring was approved by the Russellville City Schools board Tuesday afternoon, led Scottsboro from 2020-22 and was an assistant on Heaps’ staff from 2017-19. The Golden Tigers were state champs in 2017 and runner-up in 2018. Smith is a 2012 graduate of Fort Payne High School. He played on the first national championship baseball team at Alexander City’s Central Alabama Community College in 2013. After two years at Central Alabama, he signed with and played at the University of North Alabama.
“He loves Russellville and wants to be here. He has a strong belief that he and his team can and will continue the success that RHS has enjoyed.”
