Rupi Kaur may not be MY 'writer of the decade,' but that doesn't mean she isn't THE 'writer of the decade' via nparts
In The New Republic’s opinion, poet Rupi Kaur is “the writer of the decade.” While the honorific delighted many of the poet’s young fans, it also ruffled a number of feathers.
Sporting simple metaphors, visuals and affirmations, and touching on universal themes , Kaur’s work is easily relatable, but especially for readers who grew up with a cell phone in their hand and might not be able to name many other poets. Which leads to Kaur’s many detractors, who reignited the same argument the internet has been having since she stepped onto the scene.
It’s a hard truth. The last 10 years have been defined by social media and a need for connection. As has Kaur’s work — her own Instagram feed is a series of her own poems. Love her or hate her, she knows her audience. Most of which, as Alam points out, probably don’t even own one of her books. That’s saying something for a poet who has sold over 3.5-million copies. Evidently, as technology advances, so, too, does the way we read and what we read.
