The silence of politicians on the orgy of cancellations and attacks and the absence of parliamentary debate should alarm us

This cancel culture has seeped into international relations, too. After Bangladesh joined 35 other countries to abstain in a vote at the United Nations General Assembly condemning Russia, the Lithuanian government the next dayof 444,600 doses of life-saving COVID-19 vaccines that were to be sent to that country.

The absence of dissent or even of vigorous debate in Canada should alarm us. The silence of politicians on the orgy of cancellations and attacks and threats on artists, businesses, and other Canadians who don’t toe the official line is eerily reminiscent of McCarthyism and the Red Scare in Cold War America.

McCarthyism had a chilling effect on free expression in the U.S. While there was no legal sanction against speaking your mind in a country with some of the staunchest constitutional support for free speech in the world, that didn’t prevent censure from peers or neighbours and professional cancellation.

Already, beleaguered Canadians, having survived two years of the pandemic, are now facing steeply rising prices at the pump amid already high and rising inflation in food prices. If the attempt to ring-fence the rest of the world from Russia gathers pace, expect worse to come.

This is a dangerous road to travel. A prime minister who vowed to bring Canadians together and embrace “sunny ways,” and an entire political class following his lead, are presiding over a wokeish paranoia and polarization of society whose final destination is unknown.
