'This social distancing may have separated us physically, but it has connected us emotionally.' ❤️
days—which already seem so long ago—I could meet up with a friend when I was feeling anxious about the strange things happening in the world. Alternatively, if I needed some alone time, I could go to one of the numerous gyms and fitness studios in my area to sweat it out.
As a physical therapist, I'm used to spending my days incredibly close to others. I spend eight-hour shifts touching, cueing, moving with, talking to, and listening to people describe their symptoms . My job is the opposite of social distancing. And right now, it is non-existent due to the circumstances. Having chosen one of the most recession-proof, “best careers of the future,” I, like many, am stunned by this new reality. Nobody saw this coming. Nobody knows what’s next.
While social distancing has prevented running clubs from meeting, runners continue to band together in sweat and tears. This social distancing may have separated us physically, but it has connected us emotionally. While the economy weakens, our love and appreciation of running only gets stronger. And if there is any upside to all of this, one interesting side effect of the coronavirus crisis is that we are all seeing a spike in the number of fellow runners out there on our paths.
