Meet Runner’s World+ member Bill McCarthy. “I’d love to qualify for the Boston Marathon, but whether or not that happens, I want to continue to train with the goal of reaching my athletic potential.”
I consider myself to be an ordinary person who has been lucky enough to be able to pursue my athletic passions while having fun and becoming as healthy and as fit as possible. Running enriches my life and makes me a happier person. I love sharing this passion with the rest of my family and friends, and encouraging others to pursue their passions, to reach beyond their limits, and to see what great things they can accomplish.
So, what is the point, why do all of this? For me, it comes down to being curious about what I can do if I push my limits and try to do things that seem to be beyond reach. I truly enjoy being around others who are also pushing themselves to do their best, and facing similar challenges as I am. And I feel very lucky that I have the health to be able to do this. I often remind myself that not everyone has this good fortune.
When I successfully do these and more, I become a stronger person and better able to handle other challenges in my life. I want to continue to challenge myself and see what I can do, to bring out the best of me under all kinds of conditions. I especially love the camaraderie of training and competing with other athletes of all ages, supporting each other to reach a goal that only they can understand.My favorite running route is on the lakefront path in Chicago.
