“Nova Scotia Health leadership is working with local physicians and teams on the issues facing the emergency department,” the statement said in part. “At this time, the team is working on a number of mitigation strategies to reduce closures. We are committed to ensuring the community has up-to-date information once details are confirmed.Read moreCurrently, the emergency department is open from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily.

Keough said in the statement that changes were made in June to help provide a more reliable and consistent service to the community. Regular reduced hours helped maximize the available providers. Lake said he knows a handful of situations where residents needed to be at least assessed at Soldiers Memorial Hospital but were unable to do so because it was closed.“God forbid that somebody has a heart attack; God forbid somebody is in an accident,” he added. “And we know the situation with ambulatory care. It takes a long time.”

Kerr said he asked for a meeting with Health Minister Michelle Thompson earlier this month to discuss health issues across the riding, but a date has not been set.“It’s time to make the government be transparent with their recruitment and retention strategies for getting new doctors.”“There’s no course of action,” he said from outside the hospital. “If I thought that standing out here with a sign would make a difference, I would do that and I think other people would as well.
