Today is Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. A day set aside to mark the sacrifice made during the Battle of Beaumont Hamel.
Wreath-laying ceremonies are taking place at cenotaphs and war memorials throughout the province, including the National War Memorial on Duckworth Street. On July 1, 1916, members of the Newfoundland Regiment went over the top in the first day of Battle of the Somme, straight into a hail of enemy bullets. With their chins tucked in as if running into a strong wind, the Newfoundlanders were cut down by German fire. German machine guns at the time could fire 500 to 600 rounds per minute.
Of the approximately 800 Newfoundlanders who went into battle that day, only 68 answered the roll call the following morning, with more than 700 killed, wounded or missing. The Royal Canadian Legion will parade from the Sergeant’s Memorial in St. John’s this morning at 9:50, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial on Duckworth Street at 10:45. Similar ceremonies are taking place in communities throughout the province.
