Calgary Roughnecks select defender Bennett Smith, trade for goal\u002Dscorer Thomas Hoggarth on National Lacrosse League draft day
Hailing from Edmonton, Smith played Senior A lacrosse for the Victoria Shamrocks of the Western Lacrosse League this past summer. The 22-year-old notched six goals and eight assists in 18 regular-season games, adding one in the playoffs for the Shamrocks. Smith previously played for the Edmonton Junior A Miners in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League, captaining the 2022 team to a Minto Cup appearance.
In his sixth NLL campaign last year, the 6-foot-3, 205-lb. Hoggarth — a 27-year-old from Lakefield, Ont., — was fourth on the Knighthawks in both goals — a personal best — and shots and added 54 points to his career-total 171 points. At No. 37 overall, the Roughnecks chose defender Evan Soucy. The 6-foot-1, 198-lb. product of Nanaimo, B.C., and star with the WLA’s Nanaimo Timbermen, played with the NCAA’s University of Indianapolis Greyhounds, collecting 102 ground balls and causing 57 turnovers — while scoring three goals — in 46 career games the last four years. The pick was a compensatory selection for the Calgary club.
