Joe Root gives new captain Ben Stokes first Test win with mega New Zealand century
England have beaten New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s as a stunning performance from Joe Root saw him pass 10,000 Test runs.
England eventually won the Test by five wickets, capitalising on their impressive overnight tally of 216-5 that left them needing 61 runs to take the contest. It was also the first victory at the first attempt under new coach Brendon McCullum and new captain Ben Stokes, who replaced Root in May. “And obviously ‘Mr Dependable’, Joe Root, stood up. Scoring 100 and 10,000 runs – what a player and what a man.”
