Roger Stone, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, is appealing his 40-month prison sentence, as well as a federal judge's decision denying his request for a new trial.
Stone's notification of his intent to file an appeal comes amid renewed speculation that the president will pardon him and former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to the FBI about his communications with a former Russian ambassador. A federal judge on Wednesdayin November of seven crimes, including repeatedly lying to the House Intelligence Committee and obstructing its Russia investigation.
His convictions stem from his actions in 2016, when he tried to set up back-channel communications with WikiLeaks to push for the release of emails stolen from Clinton's campaign. At issue in Stone's request for a new trial is a question that jurors were asked during jury selection. They were asked whether they had posted anything publicly about Stone and the Russia investigation, which resulted in his indictment in 2019. The forewoman wrote in the questionnaire that she wasn't sure if she had posted anything.on Feb. 25, during which she and two other jurors were questioned by the judge and Stone's attorney, Seth Ginsberg.
Ginsberg singled out a social media post in which the forewoman shared an article about Stone's arrest. "Brought to you by the lock her up peanut gallery," she wrote, referring to Trump supporters' chants of"lock her up" about Hillary Clinton, Trump's Democratic opponent in 2016.
