Rockets' rookies see growing pains, gains during first season of NBA life
The Rockets' 2022-23 rookie class of TyTy Washington Jr., Tari Eason, and Jabari Smith Jr. have weathered the ups and downs of NBA life as the season reaches its final two games.CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It might say something about the Rockets’ season and the lessons learned the hard way that when rookies Tari Eason and Jabari Smith Jr. considered what they gained from their first 80 games as NBA players, they started with how they dealt with adversity.
“Whereas now, you’ve got to really turn the page fast or else it can bleed into the next game. It’s really about just staying even keel at all times.” Smith not only found his shooting touch but became better at using it. Eason became increasingly disruptive. Both excelled in those ways in, with Eason helping to key the fourth-quarter defensive takeover and Smith coming away with his eighth double-double in his past 15 games after getting eight in his first 62 games.
In his four G League playoff games, Washington made 44.7 percent of his shots, 35.7 percent of his 3s, averaging 29.8 points per game. He played in 30 games with the Rockets, making 35.5 percent of his shots, 21.8 percent of his 3s.The Rockets might not get to see if his play with the Vipers indicates that he grew through the struggles until summer league and then next season. They can already feel that was with his fellow rookies.
