Rockets insider: A grieving Stephen Silas feels the love from his team, opposing Suns

Rockets coach Stephen Silas was back with his team Tuesday night at Toyota Center, three days after the death of his father, NBA great Paul Silas. “He would have told me to ‘get your butt out there and coach,’"Silas said after his team cruised to a 111-97 win over the Suns. “So that’s what I’m doing.”Suns coach Monty Williams would not leave Toyota Center with the customary wave NBA coaches exchange after games. Not on this night. Not under these circumstances.

Silas’ emotions were raw and exposed as he returned to the Rockets on Tuesday after two days away followingThere was a great deal that drew him back, from his sense of responsibility to his team to the need for normalcy. And for much of the night, Silas could coach his players and revel in how well they played. They said, as they did Sunday, that they were playing for him.

“Monty’s like, everybody knows, one of the best people in the world,” Silas said. “It means a lot. He’s been through so much and has so many little tidbits and so many experiences that he draws from. He has a great way of communicating. Tonight, his way of communicating was through a hug, which I needed. I love him for that.”

Then his players pounced from the opening minutes, rushing to a 12-2 lead, building a 23-point margin, and closing out their fifth consecutive home win smartly in the fourth quarter.
