Bob Vasily (in black hat) tours a group through the Canadian Wollastonite mine near Seeley's Bay, Ontario
Enhanced rock weathering is a carbon removal technique that accelerates the carbon capture process by grinding silicate rocks like wollastonite down to a fine powder and applying it to agricultural land, permanently locking away CO2 from the atmosphere.Farmers in eastern Ontario are cautiously embracing a new mineral that promises to boost crop yields while also capturing atmospheric carbon.
The man behind Canadian Wollastonite, Bob Vasily, claims that for every 1.6 tonnes of crushed wollastonite spread, one tonne of carbon dioxide is captured. Project manager Harris Ivens examines a soybean plant grown on a nearby farm where wollastonite has been spread. Vasily believes there's enough of the material on the company's property to remove ten million tonnes of atmospheric carbon, "bigger than all other North American projects," he claimed.
He said the mine's farming customers who are typically skeptical of new agricultrual treatments have begun to accept wollastonite as a pH-stabilizing alternative to lime. The slow, patient approach to capture carbon replicates what already happens in nature over thousands of years. While the tractor and other loading equipment emits some CO2, this operation will fight against global warming.
