Performing between a rock act and a hip\u002Dhop hitmaker was a first for Canadian country star Tim Hicks, who played the stage at CityFolk.

“I never thought I’d ever get to play on a bill like this,” remarked the Juno-winning troubadour from Southern Ontario during his enjoyable set. “You got a rock act, a country act and a pop act, and what a wonderful thing that is, especially after all we’ve been through in the last couple of years.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

At CityFolk, in addition to spreading the music over two weekends, including this coming weekend, a significant aspect this year is the fact that all of the action takes place on one huge outdoor stage, instead of dividing the music between indoor and outdoor stages. While the one stage isn’t quite as big as the main stage at Bluesfest, it certainly dominates the site, allowing for a bigger production in terms of sound, lights and video screens.

The strategy made for some great concerts, although the programming itself moved the festival further away from its roots as the Ottawa Folk Festival, with a roster of headliners that represented a multitude of musical genres. On Thursday, fast-rising American country star Zach Bryan enthralled an at-capacity crowd of young imbibers, while Friday saw Kingston rockers The Glorious Sons sweeten their anthems by stretching them out and adding some soul to the crunch.

Evidently, due to the exertion of the performance, the Floridian took breaks between songs, disappearing from the stage and leaving a dark, awkward lull that put a damper on the party and prompted the crowd to chant his name as if wondering where he went.
