Rochester Police Chief David Smith hosted a press conference Thursday, April 4, 2024, releasing the results from the department's community engagement assessment.

Rochester Police Chief David Smith shared the results of the department's community engagement assessment Thursday. RPD requested the yearlong assessment to look at engagement practices and provide recommendations that build upon the department's strengths while addressing areas that need improvement.

The evaluation included RPD members evaluating current policies and procedures, completing a questionnaire on engagement strategies, and conducting onsite interviews with community leaders, faith leaders and crime victims. The study suggests the department dedicate more time to build community relationships, develop better ways for residents to provide input on policing and work to diversify its ranks by recruiting more individuals who are reflective of the city's communities.

"The men and women of this department cannot do it alone," Smith said. "We fully recognize that we need a strong partnership with our community. This assessment will help us build steps to build the trust in our community and make our city a safer place."
