Robert Pattinson has detailed the trial and error it took to land on his Caped Crusader's voice in TheBatman. 'I was experimenting with a lot of different things ... It seems to be the more you embody the suit, the more you embody the character.'
The Batman's Robert Pattinson has opened up about the process of experimenting on his Batman voice. The Good Time star is set to debut as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves' The Batman, inheriting the role from Ben Affleck. The movie will chronicle Batman's second year fighting crime in Gotham City and will debut in theaters on March 4.
The Batman will return to the roots of Bruce Wayne's war on crime in Gotham City. The film will follow Wayne as he embarks on a war against The Penguin and The Riddler while untangling a mysterious conspiracy involving Gotham's underworld, a conspiracy that seems to include his own family history. Along the way, he finds himself entangled with a cat burglar named Selina Kyle , who seems to have an agenda of her own.
It was a lot of trial and error. I had a lot of time to think about it. I think I was cast about seven or eight months before we started shooting. So I was experimenting with a lot of different things, and I think the first two or three weeks, we were doing a variety of different voices, because there's only a couple of lines in the first few scenes we shot. Me and Matt just sort of settled on something.
So, it seems that Pattinson did not come up with his Batman voice overnight. The vocal traits of the gritty hero took quite a bit of work, taking inspiration from other portrayals of Batman and letting the suit and role organically bring the voice out. By his own estimation, the voice is a natural occurrence when Bruce Wayne puts on the suit rather than something Bruce intentionally puts on.
Examining how Pattinson has approached his Batman voice should help give audiences a good understanding of the nature of his character, especially by comparison to other Batman actors. For example, Christian Bale's Batman notably changed his voice as a tactical way to prevent Bruce Wayne's voice from being recognized, while Affleck's Batman went the Arrow route and used a voice modulator.
