ICYMI - Robert Merasty: Ottawa’s oil and gas emissions cap will hurt Indigenous communities
When the government announced this policy, I was confused. This government has been committed to reconciliation efforts since it came to power in 2015. They have been active in pursuing reconciliation initiatives but often fell short of real self-determination. While I was not surprised, I was confused to see a government that stands on the ideals of “reconciliation” and “Indigenous rights” introduce legislation that goes against these initiatives.
So why then would the government propose a policy that would wipe all of that away and take us a step back? On the one hand, the government says it supports Indigenous rights and self-determination for First Nations. On the other hand, the government turns around and says that it will introduce policies that will cancel projects that Indigenous communities have already made investments in.
For a government that is proud to stand up for Indigenous people and state that they support self-determination and then turn around and propose this emissions cap directly contradicts their statements. I want our future generations to live in a world where they have opportunities and are not stuck in the cycle of poverty.Article content
