The clause has gained currency among Quebec nationalists who support the Quebec government’s use of it to suspend the rights of minority communities without having to worry about certain fundamental rights. The Legault government used it pre-emptively both in Bill 96 and in Bill 21 . Poilievre’s endorsement of the Bloc motion seems to be a transparent ploy to curry favour with Quebec nationalists, to perhaps make inroads in Bloc-held ridings.

The prime minister’s next step should be to send Bill C-13 back to the drawing board. In its current formulation, the federal language legislation would forever erode the status of Quebec’s linguistic minority. The Conservatives have also, by the way, sided with the Bloc on most of their amendments to C-13.

Many see Poilievre as a shrill opposition howler short on solutions, but in the current context, that can still win an election. Although he is intelligent and can be well spoken, if the contradictions continue and he is seen as a politician who doesn’t really believe in what he preaches — not really interested in freedom, but in just gaining power — he could blow the opportunity.
