Column: Roaring, rowdy Petco Park bear-hugs Padres in NLDS Game 3 win over Dodgers
They cheered San Diego Wave FC star Alex Morgan. They cheered UFC President Dana White. They cheered surfer Rob Machado. They cheered Padres catcher Austin Nola as he walked to the bullpen, 45 minutes before first pitch. They cheered the team’s strength and conditioning coach during roster introductions.
Pivotal Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Dodgers on Friday, a 2-1 insta-classic in favor of the home team, stirred in history and the long simmering anticipation of a city, pent up for more than a decade and a half. The cacophony carried to the bottom of the inning on Juan Soto’s one-out double to right. As Jake Cronenworth roped a two-out, run-scoring single to center, most of the 45,137 in attendance, the most for a postseason game in Petco history, rose in full-throated unison.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Dodgers threatened to do the kinds of things they do to the Padres too often. A bloop single by former Padres outfielder Trayce Thompson preceded an Austin Barnes double. A sacrifice fly by Mookie Betts cut the lead in half, before Snell induced a pop up from Trea Turner and inning-ending groundout by Freeman.“They were rocking and ready to go the entire game,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said.
At some point, one was said to be floating in a training tub in the clubhouse. A Padres source with direct knowledge of the situation said there were four in all, brought to the park by video coordinator Joe McAlpin. A few feet away, CEO Erik Greupner walked to the dugout in a pair of screaming yellow Air Jordans to accent his suit in a way that surely was visible from the International Space Station. The shoes made just one previous appearance, on opening day in April.Gallagher Square was jammed like a clown car. Petco’s collective blood-alcohol level crept north by the inning.
