Councils have now fleets of gritters at the ready to respond if more roads ‘melt’ due to high temperatures.This ‘acts like a sponge to soak up excess bitumen’, according to the local authority. Road chiefs in Doncaster and Lincolnshire also have gritters poised to be sent out on similar excursions.The gritters will spread a ‘light dusting’ of sand on to tarmac surfaces The areas most likely to be targeted by the vehicles this week are those with older road surfaces, in rural locations and south facing.More:
