Cst. James Cadigan told reporters police made an arrest on March 2 related to a scam in the province targeting seniors.- Evan Careen/The TelegramST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is advising seniors and their families to be more vigilant after an arrest on Thursday, March 2, relating to what is commonly known as a grandparent scam.

“A phone number was provided to the senior, who was told to call back once money was withdrawn from their bank and they were informed at that point that an individual would attend their home to pick up that money,” Cadigan said. “In some of the cases reported to the RNC, there were thousands in losses.”

He said police have received over a dozen reports so far about this scam and believe there are other victims, so they are encouraging anyone with information to contact the RNC. • If you receive a call from anyone claiming to be law enforcement, looking to get personal information, end the conversation and contact the police.• Use caution posting online. Fraudsters can gather information from your social media accounts that will make their claims sound legitimate.
