New research by experts at the European Central Bank and a German university has found that transmission of COVID-19 via banknotes is 'very unlikely.'

TORONTO -- Amid fears of transmitting COVID-19 via the handling of cash, some retailers across Canada enacted no-cash policies in the early months of the pandemic. A recent study, however, has shown that the risk of spreading the disease when you open your wallet could be quite low.

A stainless-steel surface was used as a control for the experiments. After seven days, infectious virus remained present on the steel, but on a €10 note it took three days to completely disappear. As for €1, 10-cent and five-cent coins, it took six days, two days and one hour, respectively, to disappear.
