JOHN'S, N.L. — Sonya Smith said she has heard from single parents who are concerned about the rising price of milk.
About 200 families use the SPAN food bank monthly — a number that has increased since last year, Smith said.A SaltWire editor kept her receipts. She shops at Cabot Square Dominion on Stavanger Drive in St. John’s. On Sept. 7, 2021, she paid $3.59 for a two-litre carton of 1 per cent milk. By Sept. 6, 2022, the price for the same carton at the same store was $4.57.
“Demand at that helpline is shooting up incredibly fast. We’re projecting that it’ll double between the spring and the fall this year,” said Smee.Do you want to help single parents?
