An unused Rey concept was resurrected.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker contained many elements of previous Star Wars films, drawing inspiration from unused concepts created for other episodes in the saga, and one reused Star Wars: The Force Awakens concept really stands out. Years earlier, during the production of The Force Awakens, things were much more complicated.
One of Abrams and Arndt's ideas for The Force Awakens was an exploration of the underwater wreckage of the second Death Star, destroyed 30 years earlier in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. This concept would have seen the young female protagonist, later developed into Rey Skywalker, swimming not only among the trenches and turrets of the submerged battle station, but into the Emperor's throne room itself, as revealed in concept art for The Force Awakens.
How The Second Death Star Plot Was Reused From The Force Awakens This concept of exploring the second Death Star's debris was never actually in the final cut of The Force Awakens , but it was reused almost wholly in the second act of The Rise of Skywalker. The galaxy during the Sequel Trilogy is haunted by its past of war, and mismanaged by Star Wars' New Republic, a stagnant and inactive peacetime government.
Did Rise Of Skywalker's Second Death Star Plot Work? While The Rise of Skywalker didn't include any swimming through underwater wreckage, it did feature Rey exploring the battle station on her own, both echoing her past of scavenging Imperial technology, and reflecting on the revelation that she was the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine. This way, Rey is physically and metaphorically dealing with the aftermath of the Emperor's actions.
