“I’d put her in the stroller and set up a playpen area for her,” Heather Treece said. “As she got older, she’d go shag balls or go in the weight room and hang around with the other girls. From early on, she just saw that this is what mom does.” Riley Treece was paying close attention too. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of the program’s history. For instance, she vividly recalls Valparaiso’s loss to Carmel in a 2014 Class 4A semistate semifinal — and still feels the sting.“They won the first two sets and then ended up losing the other three,” Riley Treece said of the Vikings. “I was in elementary school, and I remember that being one of the rougher days of my life.”“This is something I’ve always wanted,” she said.
