“If we had a sobering centre would this have made a difference to Corey Rogers and that family? I don’t know but I think that doing this kind of work is the right thing to do for our municipality ...' says Coun. Tony Mancini.

On Tuesday, Halifax regional council approved a three-year pilot program for a sobering centre in Halifax. - FileHalifax is getting a sobering centre for a three-year pilot that will alleviate the pressure from the drunk tank in the basement of Halifax Regional Police headquarters.

A sobering centre would divert many repeated intakes: an estimated 35-40 per cent diversion from police custody and about 60 per cent diversion from emergency departments. A transportation and outreach team would take even more pressure off of police and paramedics. “This is a 0.5 per cent increase to the tax bill that we are going to be approving today if this goes through for next year and the year after, and ongoing,” Purdy said.
