Various Conservative commentators have mused that the most important thing in the upcoming federal leadership race is “winning.” Who can win and beat Trudeau? Various campaigns gleefully seek to position themselves as winners and present largely irrelevant early poll results. People join the campaigns of those who look best positioned to win, in hopes of winning with them.
The poet David Thoreau is said to have observed that “Happiness is like a butterfly: the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.” Still, we should be careful about the discussion of vision. Margaret Thatcher once said that “being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” And Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones observed that “Any man who must say, ‘I am the king’ is no true king.” Leaders who promise vision should be tested on their actual ability to specifically articulate a substantive vision for this country.
